Week 10 Story: The Jewelry Soothsayer

Image
There once was an ambitious, talented woman, named Gamze, who recently lost her job working as a jewelry appraiser. She was fired because they suspected her of theft; she hated discovering her colleagues' mistrust of and prejudice against Turkish people. Gamze was cast as a soothsayer, a trickster, a thief in their imagination, dismissing her dedication to her work and willingness to help others. She had a husband, named Alperan, who was stuck - stuck between 40 and 50 years and caught between multiple jobs. Gamze wanted more from their life, and she knew that she would be the one to raise the status of their family. Gamze looked for other jobs but this reputation followed her to job interviews. She wondered how they could suspect her; if she had stolen the diamond and sapphire ring, she would not be subjecting herself to interviews with old white men. One evening, a previous client, Benan, called Gamze to see if she had appraised a stolen necklace in the last few days. Gamze k

Week 8 Progress

Image
I was happy with my progress until a couple weeks ago. Things started to get busier and I prioritized other assignments over the blog posts or comments I needed to do for Mythology and Folklore. At the time it was the right decision because I can do extra credit assignments for this class. However, now I will have to catch up in the class. I am sitting at a B, but if I do one extra credit assignment every week for 4 weeks then I should be back on track. I am most proud of my stories, especially the ones that I have given a modern twist. I have been using my imagination about the future to inspire me along with the creativity in the original myths and fairy tails.  For the future, I need to realize that the storybook assignments take longer than the others, because we edit past things and post new things during some of the weeks. I leave the weekend assignments to the last minute. I should work on them Friday morning because I am usually free at that time. I think it would also

Week 8 Comments and Feedback

Image
I have really enjoyed all of the feedback I have received. Everyone is very supportive in the class. Sometimes, I will write something and it doesn't have my complete support or pride and getting comments back about those things can be difficult; I just tend to think, "but that is not my best work!" The comments are helpful, especially for the storybook project because it is part of the coursework to edit them. It is nice to get the perspective of readers and fellow writers. Hopefully, people find my comments helpful. I try to ask questions and make suggestions while praising certain aspects of the story that I enjoyed. I liked practicing the pretend feedback strategy because I had never given feedback like that. It gave focus and purpose to my comments because I was advocating for a character. I do get a sense of connecting with people in the class through the comments left on my stories and through reading their stories. I now recognize names and have bookmarked a c

Week 8 Reading and Writing

Image
I want to change the title of my storybook, but I want to write maybe one more story before I do it. I need to have more context from my stories to craft a new title. Besides that, I like the look of my website. I have the same banner image throughout the different pages and I think it brings the site continuity. I do want to find images, illustrations, paintings of a black woman to represent the mother character. For my blog, I am happy with the way it is set up. I looked at other templates for the site and kept coming back to the one I already have! Looking back, I need to work on reading like a writer. When I am reading, I don't know what direction I am going to take the retelling in, so it is hard for me to take notes in a way that will help my writing. I usually read and take notes over the plot and sometimes things that I like about the original. Then, later I think more about how I will change it. The one thing I want to work on in my writing is describing people. I want

Week 7 Story: Taylor's Magical Brain Scanner

Image
Taylor was a computer engineer and always described computers as magical because they compute data in milliseconds, spread knowledge and ideas, and perform seemingly impossible tasks. People would say, "Oh ya, I guess computers are like magic," but Taylor's belief went further than that. When he became a father to a young boy, Ashten, through adoption. Taylor instilled this belief into his son by making up bed-time stories in which computers and technology performed magic. They were the heroes and sometimes the villains of every story. Taylor would often take inspiration from the Turkish myths and fairy tales his own parents told him when he grew up, passing along the oral tradition of the family but with a twist! A few days after Ashten turned 19, his father became sick - he was nauseous regularly, had tremors in his hands, and seized frequently. They went to about 5 doctors including specialists, but no one could tell them why he was so sick. The only thing th
