Introduction to a Future Health Professional

Hellloooo everyone, my name is Karissa Hughes, and here is a little bit about me. I have twin, who I live with and also goes to OU; the nature of our relationship is loving annoyance. Although I do not have a cat, my roommate does, and I'm already obsessed with him and his little socks. His name is Boomer, and sometimes I accidentally call him Sooner.

My major is Health, Medicine, and Society. It is multidisciplinary, which I appreciate because I like learning from different perspectives, and is geared towards pre-Medicine students. I have already completed all of the pre-Med prerequisites, but I'm still not exactly sure if I want to go to medical school. I recently learned more about the field of Public Health and have become interested in possibly pursuing a career in that instead. Health has become my passion, especially learning more about the social aspects of health, how various identities affect health experiences, and the reasons behind and consequences of health disparities.

Questions about favorites are sometimes hard to answer, but I recently discovered that I know my favorite movie and song off the top of my head. My favorite movie has been and might always be Seabiscuit, which is about an underdog racehorse and the impact he has on people's lives. I love the emotions that the movie is able to produce, making the audience laugh, cry, and cheer.  I also grew up with horses; my sisters were more involved with them, but I always appreciated their majesty, power, and beauty. My song of the summer has been "I Want to Break Free" by Queen. I would blast it driving down the Pacific Coast Highway when I was visiting my family in Long Beach. My parents listened to some Queen growing up, but I didn't fall in love with the band, their message, and music until I watched Bohemian Rhapsody. There is much more to me and my life than this, but at least it is an introduction! I am excited to read other peoples posts, explore my creativity, and learn interesting myths and folklores this semester.

  1. Hi Karissa!

I’m a senior pre-med/biochemistry major here at OU, so right now I’m applying to med school. I can absolutely understand where you’re coming from with debating if you want to go to med school. It’s a pretty intensive process JUST to get an interview plus the tons of school you still have to go through once you’re in. Having a multidisciplinary degree is SO useful/looked for in today’s society – people aren’t just looking for a one-dimensional college kid, but someone who can look at a problem with multiple different perspectives. Can’t wait to see what stories/projects you come up with!

  2. Hello Karissa!
I am a Biology Pre-Med student and I want to go to med school, but I am absolutely terrified. My biggest fear is not being able to succeed and I think it is because I put so much pressure on myself to be a perfect student. However, I do not have a back up plan at the moment, so I really hope med school works out....
I can't really name my favorite movie, but your favorite reminded me of the movie Secretariat, and I loved watching that movie growing up! Have you ever seen it?

  3. Hey Karissa! I think that's awesome that you're going into a health-related field - that's something that will never go away, you know? Your cat is super cute, does he respond when you accidentally call him Sooner? I'm also super jealous that you have a twin, I'm the oldest of three and always wonder what it would be like if I had an older sibling/someone closer in age to me. Did you get to see the new Queen movie?

  4. Hi Karissa!

I think that is so cool that you have a twin sister; I could see why the relationship would involve love and annoyance though! I think the field of public health would be a great place for you to major in because of all your interests in several different subjects. One of my good friends is a public health major, and she just finished an internship this past summer in Michigan. Good luck with your studies!!

  5. Hey Karissa!
I am starting to get to the time of my college career where I am applying for law schools, but I have doubts too, so I really understand where you're coming from. It's really scaring to commit to more schooling and a set job already. But, its also scary to be going into the workforce in a year/ year- and-a-half. I hope you can utilize your support system during this time. You got this!

  6. Ohhhhh, this Boomer looks like such a sweetie, Karissa; tuxedo cats are awesome. We had one named Einstein, and we still miss him; this is our Einstein: click for pic (we originally had named him Seamus but we changed his name when we realized he was one of those supernaturally smart cats).
About Public Health: I have a friend who was a pediatric nurse for years, and she went back to school to get a master's in Public Health, and she was really happy with the work she was then able to do advocating for children and neonatal health issues. Maybe you can find a medical school program where you can pursue both degrees at once...? I bet there are some MD-MPH joint programs because it seems like that is just the kind of thing our society needs: health professionals who can appreciate medicine from both sides like that, both here in the U.S. and with a global perspective too.

  7. Hi Karissa, it's nice to meet you!
I also have a tuxedo cat (whom you can view on my own intro page), but his name is Atticus (the Catticus) Boots! I hope you are able to pursue your passion for Health, regardless of whether or not you choose medical school. Also, I'm a fan of Queen's music, as well! Best of luck this semester!

  8. Howdy,

your major sounds really interesting. It sounds like a mishmash of things, which I imagine can be really fun. I am a psych major, but I definitely draw upon my leanings from my HR classes and my sociology classes, so I understand how useful it can be to have different perspectives from an array of fields. I love the picture of boomer with his socks, adorable.

  9. Hey Karissa!
I am also a twin! Unfortunately he goes to school in Maryland, so we are seperated most of the year - I'm jealous you and your twin get to be roommates! (After being wombmates, am I right?) It's always felt to me like having a built in best friend. I am also a huge Queen fan and loved the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. It was amazing to see the story of the band brought to life and to become more familiar with Freddie's crazy life. Best of luck in your endeavors with public health - it is such an important field!

  10. Hey Karissa!
That is really neat that you have a twin, I have a younger sister and sometimes have wondered what it would have been like to have a twin. Your major is very interesting! I have some friends in that field and they really enjoy it. I think learning about health is a very interesting topic. I have taken some classes and my favorite was HES-diseases because I loved how it gave information on how we can combat the diseases that infect our body every year. It was also neat learning about the different types of diseases. Your life definitely sounds like a fun time and I hope you have a great semester!

  11. Hi Karissa!
I love the movie Bohemian Rhapsody! I had not been a huge fan of Queen until I watched the movie, but I have listened to their music on replay ever since! I think that your major is super cool. I actually haven't heard of Health, Medicine, and Society but I kind of wish I would have known about it when I chose my major! It seems super applicable. Best of luck with deciding which route you're wanting to chose career-wise! I know you'll chose what's best for you!

  12. Hi Karissa! I think your major is so interesting! I just discovered it a few months ago when I was looking at degree sheets. I wish it had been a thing when I first started college because like you, I also like learning from different perspectives. I think the field of medicine is so vast that sometimes it's hard to pinpoint what exactly you want to do but I'm glad you have a passion for health. Good luck deciding which career path you want to take! I hope you have a great rest of the semester!

  13. Hi Karissa,

Thanks for sharing a little bit about yourself to the class! I love the picture of the cat Boomer, he's super cute! Last year I lived with some friends and one of them had a cat named Poppy, I miss her bunches, so I love seeing pictures of cats. I also have never heard of that major at OU, when you first described it, I thought you meant you were doing three majors all at once! I hope you're able to find the right career path for you! Good luck the rest of this semester!

  14. Hi Karissa,
Your cat is adorable. I am allergic so I never got to have one. Did you use to live in Cali? Healthcare has always been somewhere in my plan, but I have switched it up a few times. I think I finally settled though, in my senior year. I accidentally call my dog all sorts of names, now she just answers to whatever starts with a B!
    It was lovely meeting you.

  15. Hi Karissa! Oh my gosh that cat literally has little socks! That is so cute. I am personally allergic to cats, so they are not really my thing. The picture it cute though. I also think it is awesome that you want to go into the health field. It is such a special field that needs people with big hearts and open minds.

  16. Hi Karissa! It is nice to meet you online! I think it is a great accomplishment that you have completed all your pre reqs for med school but are making sure that is (or isn’t) the right path for you. There are so many different avenues you can take in the health industry. I am currently searching for jobs in the health communication realm. I have always loved Queen but after watching the movie I agree that it can make you love his music and message even more!

  17. Hi Karissa!
It must be fun having a twin, and I thought it was very humorous how you described your relationship. I wish my roommate had a pet like that, and I thought it was just so adorable how the kitty wears socks! I feel like this is a convenient way to bond with a fluffy animal, without having to deal with buying food and taking care of it LOL.
Can't wait to read more of your work!

  18. Hi Karissa,

I too have a cat! His name is Willy. This is my first ever experience with a cat because growing up i have always had dogs so if you have any tips or tricks please feel free to reach out! Also I think twins are so cool! Don't get me wrong I love my brother to death but I've always wondered what it would be like to have someone look just as good as I do. I wonder what kind of competition it would stir up.

  19. Hey Karissa,

I too have a cat. His name is Willy! HAHA! Ryan and I live together with our other two roommates, and we all claim the cat as our own (it's mine tho). I always wanted to have twins, but I don't know I could deal with two babies at the same time. But if I did have twins, they would be AWESOME and so good at sports and oh they would be so cool. Nice meeting you!
